1. Guyabano is rich in Acetogenins, potent anticancer agents

A study found that soursop contains significant amounts of Acetogenins, which were identified in its seeds, leaves, bark, roots, and fruit.

These Acetogenins are powerful inhibitors of NADH oxidase—an enzyme found in the membranes of cancer cells.

2. It may have cell-killing (cytotoxic) effects on cancer

Cytotoxicity refers to the ability to destroy cells. Treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy are examples of cytotoxic approaches used against cancer.

In one study, researchers found that guyabano demonstrated strong cytotoxic effects on cervical HeLa cancer cells³. However, this experiment was not conducted on human subjects.

3. Guyabano compounds may trigger cell death (apoptosis)

Apoptosis refers to a process where cells are naturally programmed to die. If this process is disrupted or prevented, it can lead to uncontrolled cell growth, which may result in cancer⁴.

Recent studies indicate that guyabano can promote apoptosis in certain cancer cells⁵. For example, extracts from guyabano leaves and fruit have been shown to trigger apoptosis in breast, colorectal, leukemia, cervical HeLa, and lung cancer cells.

4. Guyabano may help stop the spread of cancer cells (antiproliferative)

Cell proliferation is considered a key factor in cancer growth and progression. Cancer is often marked by a malfunction in the cell cycle, where cells multiply rapidly, leading to tumor development.

By slowing down or inhibiting this uncontrolled growth, cancer may be more manageable.

Research suggests that guyabano possesses antiproliferative properties that could slow the spread of prostate cancer cells. It may also reduce proliferation in colorectal, liver, breast, and lung cancer cells.

5. Guyabano contains compounds that support overall health

Maintaining good health is essential when managing cancer. One study highlighted that soursop offers several beneficial properties², including:

    • Antioxidant
    • Antihypertensive
    • Antiparasitic
    • Anti-inflammatory
